Michalis Moschoutis’ music is powerful. its intensity makes you fall from your cozy feathery blanket straight onto the hard wooden floor. For a music critic, this is an epiphanic moment, considering that you are hardly driven to radical thoughts when listening to all the sugar-coated pop sounds. And then there’s the instrument. A guitar. Nothing but a guitar. Michalis Moschoutis examines the device with shivering hands and stiff fingers. He is both drunk off his feet and at the same time as painstaking as someone who builds ships from matches. Every now and then, this reminds us of Bill Orcutt another berserk on the guitar. But while Bill Orcutt aims at the whole space surrounding his instrument, Michalis Moschoutis almost crawls into his guitar. »Nylon« is the name of this LP, his debut, and the Athens-based musician is testing out every single sonic fiber. Surprisingly, this isn’t a one-sided thing, and it’s an entertaining one, too. His style is dominated by rhythmical patterns (»Here’s How«), turned into elegiac triumph (»There Is On«). He is testing out the limits of every piece of his instrument (»NLN«), including a short visit to the repair shop (»Nylon Love«). The greatest track is called »eTowards Below And Aboi«, and I can’t even put my finger on why I like it best. It’s probably got something to do with Ornette Coleman.
