Moses Yoofee Trio understood early how attention is organised today: intense live energy, algorithm-friendly tightness, international tours. Yet the hype around the Berlin formation is generated not only by smart visibility, but by a sound that brings together influences from jazz and R&B to broken beat in a way that is accessible and layered at once. Chasing Light is an interim balance sheet of this approach.
The EP condenses what defines the trio: hip-hop grooves, fusion fragments and improvisational openness interlock without tipping into cerebral virtuosity. Instead of excessive solos, the band relies on texture, repetition and precisely placed dynamic shifts. The energy pushes forward: on »Nothing to Lose«, breakbeat patterns drive the track on constantly, overlaid with siren-like synth lines and processed vocals from featured guest Mulay, while »Inner Circles« builds on an Afrobeat foundation. With Ahmad Mateen on »Honest«, the dynamic shifts: his velvety voice and the wonky groove offer one final opportunity to lean back.
Chasing Light thus first confirms the impression of a band that uses its influences precisely. The sound connects to London and New York – from Yussef Kamaal to Robert Glasper – without losing itself completely in them. The more interesting question, however, will be what comes after this condensation, and how such a zeitgeisty sound continues to develop.
