Yes, it is a bit funny to introduce oneself in music-magazines as a »dusty ass motherfuckers«, »bitch ass with nappy ass hair«, »ugly as fuck« and »dirty fat ass«. But how do you explain to feature writers what gay ass« Sid does with her »clit on other bitches nipples and shit whatnot«? Best not to bother at all, especially since Odd Future never wanted to function as the spokespeople of their generation, which is what they emphatically make clear again on »The OF Tape Vol. 2«. They much rather see themselves as autistic Wunderkids who just don’t want to grow up (»We Got Bitches«). But didn’t something happen in between? The most talented, Earl, disappeared more or less voluntarily into a Boot Camp in Samoa, the pretty one, Frank, out of a sudden revolted towards R’n’B and supports Coldplay these days, and the crazy one, Tyler, gave birth to a »Goblin«. They visibly struggle to keep up the edgy attitude – which is not half as limited and predictable as people tend to accuse them – and bundle it in something like a label-sampler; and even they know what that means on HipHop-grounds. It works best when Hodgy Beats raps (»Rella«, »Real Bitch«), Frank Ocean sings (»White«) or Tylers makes his beat sound as if a young Pharrel was biting Pete Rock (»Oldie«). The N.E.R.D.y »Ya Know« by Syd’s and Matt Martian’s internet-project gives an insight into how tight the Tumblr-corset has become for the skater-gang. As an overview of OFWGKTA works, »The OF Tape Vol. 2« still kind of works, but if they additionally place the best tracks in solo-projects, as they already did with their last record, the joke is somewhat lost on the way.
