The hook in »What They’ll Say« goes: »I will fight the good fight/I will go where there’s no path and leave behind a trail«. Meaning: Oddisee is taking his music to a place where no man has gone before, paving the path for all the others to come. Boom bap and conscious rap seem to be the best foundation for this approach. On top of it all, Oddisee (who has produced the record all by himself) builds a construction of eclectically combined sounds. They are electronic or analogue by nature, and whatever they’re made of, their rhythms keep crossing all genre-borders. The arrangements are jazzy and their complexity is fun to explore, while the record remains light-footed and catchy at all times. It becomes a bit more intellectual when the lyrics kick in, but Oddisee refrains from all the rap-clichés and instead convinces us with personal and interpersonal topics. He wears his heart on his toungue in every single track. His impressive and sometimes impervious metaphoric language and his challenging flow speed complete the demanding overall picture. Oddisee’s delivery is as energetic as ever, and yet it’s as relaxed as it gets – it’s easy to hear that here’s an MC who went about it with utter peace of mind.
