Ultraääni Records is a wonderful label. It only releases great music. Spiritual jazz, free jazz. And now a piano album by Olli Aarni. And not just clean, but pure: a piano album. Nothing but white and sometimes black keys. It has something of a Finnish summer fairy tale about it and the wish that it will rain on the dog days, because: rain, asphalt. Those in the know call it petrichor. And Olli Aarni knows. He is someone who otherwise jumps around in the woods with a microphone and misuses cassette recorders and now has simply made an album. Sometimes it’s long, often right in the middle. But always in a way that makes you think after two too short LP sides: Hey, isn’t that Roedelius?
»Kuvioita « is indeed a beautiful thing. If we were on the feature pages, we would probably get lost on lonely forays through barren landscapes or try to understand the fleeting moments of bittersweet melancholy. We might also be exploring harmonious plays of colour, or seeking the greatest emotions in absolute restraint. But we don’t. It’s a shame, really.
