Shuttle358

Optimal.lp

Keplar • 1999

Keplar is a label whose release schedule is far from trendy. In contrast, the Berlin-based imprint has made a name for itself with reissues of albums from around the turn of the millennium over the past few years. Arovane, Vladislav Delay, electronic music, but not necessarily for dancing, more for listening. In any case, music that rightly defined the spirit of the times.

Although perhaps less well known than the aforementioned acts, Shuttle358 fit seamlessly into this illustrious series with their 1999 début album »Optimal.lp«. Over nine tracks, Dan Abrams created an underwater panorama in a test tube that clicked, cut, developed mysterious moments and floated in timeless beauty. Sometimes, like on »System«, even on just one track. The playful yet controlled melody of the regular closer »Tank«, which resolves the initial unease of the opener »Swarm«, is also fantastic. It goes straight down, with echoing diving bells à la Autechre and rumbling sonars with no definable pitch, reminiscent of Mike Parker’s hypnotic techno. And at some point you are so deep and irrevocably stuck in the deep sea that all you can do is enjoy it. For this Dan Abrams has his melodies—and three previously unreleased bonus tracks that let the deep dive continue for an eternity.
