Two releases by the british producer Submerse, who lives in Tokyo, have attracted the electronic music scene’s attention this summer. After »They Always Come Back EP«, which aims directly at electronic dance music, follows the two-dimensional and playful »Tears EP« on Project:Mooncircle, which convinces the listener with flowing melodies and pitched vocal samples. This works perfectly well in combination wit the broken UK Garage-drum structure, which stirs the harmonious elements on »Kerosene« and »Meaningless Moments In capsules«. Whereas the first of these tracks surprises with a speedy beginning and a focus on an offbeat and blurred percussions in its second half, the second explores a more epic composition with an ensnared center part, long first and final notes and a foundation of a clicking and rustling vinyl-structure. The tracks before, »Cream Soda« and »It’s Over, I Lost« cannot quite achieve this, as, despite their many-voiced structure, they don’t reach the same level of interest. »Pressure« is the only track which is stringently formed in common time and is therefore a beautiful, but also a low-strain part of the EP. It is all fixed by the last, name-giving finale »Tears«, which ends the exotic and positive atmosphere of the EP with a vast Burial-esque arrangement made of rhythmic games and interspersed vocal elements.
