If you’re into the more laid-back side of electronic music, Ulla and Ultrafog’s new album, »It Means A Lot,« is a great early summer pick. Released on Motion Ward, it’s got a dreamlike quality, like the sun’s rays peeking through the trees and a light breeze bringing a carefree trance.
The combination of shoegaze guitar riffs, a few subs and soaring, subdued vocals creates a captivating and immersive atmosphere. It’s got a dreamy, pop-like quality, but it also has a very personal, intimate feel. Take »dumb rain«, for instance. It’s a heavy shower of piano notes that leaves you feeling thoughtful and tranquil. It’s pretty unusual to hear so much attention paid to deliberate silence—a pleasant emptiness filled with space. The bass is relentless, building up again and again. »It Means A Lot« is glitchy, but also so close. The duo’s first performances showcased a light yet demanding style of music. It’s a new kind of intimate music that couldn’t be more versatile in its minimalist facets.
