Simply brilliant: what Coco Maria has been doing over the past few years is nothing short of inspiring. Her warm and wholehearted approach to bringing the music of Latin America to the world’s dance floors is deeply charming. Whether as a DJ, on social media, her website, her NTS show, or now through her new label Club Coco – nothing feels forced. Everything radiates genuine love for music: every smile, every sound is there for its own sake.
After two successful Club Coco compilations released via Les Disques Bongo Joe, a new sampler now appears on her own label – composed almost entirely of previously unreleased tracks. It offers fresh takes on Colombian champeta, Latin funk, digital cumbia, bossa nova and synth-soul.
Carefully selected and perfectly arranged by a DJ who follows her instincts. The Mexican-born Coco Maria is known for her passion for crate-digging, and on her travels she’s built connections with local musicians wherever she’s gone. The result is documented on New Dimensions in Latin Music: a personal collection featuring contributions from Argentina, Cuba, Peru, and even Italy – each artist presenting their own interpretation of Latin American sound.
»The Latin American diaspora is one of the most important sources of energy for this project,« Coco Maria explains in the liner notes. »Had I never left Mexico, I probably wouldn’t be doing this. Music is an anchor for all of us – a way to feel close to home, even from far away.« With her new Club Coco label, she’s now sending those positive energies far beyond the diaspora.
