Raï means »opinion« in Arabic, and that is exactly what the folk and pop music that emerged in western Algeria in the 1980s is all about. The lyrics, often improvised, often deal with social issues. Over time, the style has merged with modern electronic elements and funk influences to create an unmistakable, infectious energy, as can be heard on »Sweet Rebels – The Golden Era of Algerian Pop-Raï«. Curated by Parisian DJ and label owner Cheb Gero and presented by Wewantsounds, the compilation revives an era and illuminates the revolutionary spirit of the Raï stars of the 1980s and early 1990s, including Cheb Zahouani, Chaba Zohra and Abderrahmane Djalti.
The eight carefully selected tracks show how Raï has evolved from its traditional roots into a funky and hypnotic sound. The very first track, Chabe Rassi 1989, with its energetic atmosphere, invites you to get carried away by the rhythm. Remastered and with extensive commentary by raï luminary Rabah Mezouane, this compilation is a fantastic homage to the golden era of Algerian pop raï. Incidentally, the genre has officially been part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for the past three years and has been included in UNESCO’s Representative List. A must for all fans of Algerian music history.
