Recorded in an abandoned cistern in Geneva, IN / OUT captures the atmosphere of the place. Everything reverberates, echoes and trembles on this album by Argentinian cellist Violeta Garcia. In a synchronized world where music has to function according to algorithms and numbers in order to attract as much attention as possible, Garcia retreats into sound. It’s not about songs – this record is about an experience. Improvisation and composition merge, modern classical music sinks into dark ambient.
Accordingly, there is little rhythm in IN / OUT, rather the cello buzzes, as in »OUT I«, as if announcing a coming catastrophe. And of course all this can be interpreted accordingly, if the first four pieces lead inwards and the last four outwards. But Violeta Garcia does not offer a clear destination. There is a threat and yet there is no threat. There is emptiness and yet there is no emptiness. Every sound on this album revolves around one thing, begins with an end and ends with a beginning.
For IN / OUT , Garcia worked with new sounds, prepared instruments, and different techniques than on her previous records. And yet it is her cello playing that opens up the spaces on this album. Emptiness, darkness and loneliness have not sounded so beautiful in a long time.
