Futuristic, cool in its aesthetic, yet physical and organic in its effect – that is probably the most accurate way to describe this four-track EP. With Riding the Bassline, whø?, alias Who Is Paula, presents a sound in which the early 1990s, Detroit techno and the bleep era meet modern, shimmering sonic motifs. A hypnotic pull of precise machine rhythms and pulsing basslines.
While hypnotically circling acid waves still set the tone on the title-opening track, on the following »Voices« they give way to flickering, glassy synth planes. These settle like a shimmering veil over the bassline and immerse the previously rough electro in iridescent colours. It is precisely from this tension that the EP’s particular appeal emerges: a fragile beauty that seems to hover above the massive foundation of the swelling basslines.
Were Riding the Bassline a moment, it would sound like a nocturnal drive through a neon-soaked motorway tunnel, warm slipstream on the skin, flickering lights at the edge of vision and, beneath it all, a pulsing heartbeat that keeps setting the pace without pause.
