Progressive house meets techno: for years, Sleep D have been synonymous with flawless, mind-bending music for Bush Doofs and all those who still want to push forward within the moderate BPM range. Mosam Howieson, on the other hand, has previously released tracks on labels such as Semantica, which means: techno, relentless, with little room for interpretation. Both acts hail from Australia.
The title track, as the opener, takes off faster than just about anything Sleep D are likely to have blasted into the outback so far: dubby, wheezing sounds meet a cushioned kick and fast, mechanical chord loops that are somewhat reminiscent of Paula Temple’s ‘Gegen’. But we’re still a bit too slow for that. ‘Inertia’ too – a track title that simply had to feature on this EP – envelops you in a cocoon, though it relies more on intensity than on tempo. A bassline that constantly mirrors itself, and arpeggios that have always been there and have always been a blast. The result is a trusty behemoth of a track and a wide-mouthed, frog-like grin, whilst the artificial birds chirp.
»Mirror Pool« straddles the line between trance and dub, drawing us deep into the night, blurred, constantly shifting the distance between head and floor. No wonder Konduku chose this, the most psychedelic track, for his remix. The Dutch artist constructs a dull, throbbing, cautiously probing entity. With a dry snare, his work—that good old sound exploration, that masterful play with levels of consciousness—is complete.
