A »nothingburger« isn’t the next big thing after veganism — it’s something you might translate as »all hype« or »much ado about nothing.« But on his Nothingburger EP, Daniel Fisher aka Car Culture delivers anything but empty promises — he even includes a few special extras alongside his own tracks.
The opener »Coping Mechanism« drifts along as an effects-washed piece of dream rock — an instrumental loop construct where acoustic instruments and sampling create a dense flow: psychedelic dub at its finest. On the title track, more guitar and an incantatory vocal enter the mix: “I want to hold you in my arms.”
What sets the EP apart are the so-called »versions,« which aren’t mere remixes but full-fledged reinterpretations. Purelink transform »Coping Mechanism« into an ambient chamber, framed by delicate sonic artifacts at the edges. Meanwhile, indie rock band Hotline TNT re-record »Nothingburger« from scratch — soft, monotone shoegaze riffs meet layered harmonies. It’s an intriguing dialogue, as Fisher doesn’t just let others reshape his material but consciously deploys a wide range of musical approaches. And all of this in under 20 minutes.
