Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin clearly associate the word »ghosted« with something more positive than the average person might. The three musicians have now reunited for the third time under that title to record a new album. Ghosted III expands their previous collaboration – both stylistically and structurally.
Minimal music, jazz and post-rock remain the cornerstones of their approach. But this time the material feels more open, less conceptually contained. Instead of four tracks (as on the previous instalments), there are six – and the track titles are now in Kurdish. »Yek« opens with a guitar line whose rhythm hints at African polyrhythms. »Do« moves forward in ambient fashion, while »Seh« is driven by a singing bassline that gently breaks up the otherwise repetitive structure with melodic motion. Still, repetition remains the guiding principle.
What distinguishes this music is its spirit of small differences: seemingly static patterns shift ever so slightly, leading listeners through complex forms by micro-movements. The result is music that carries you along without overwhelming – leaving ample space to think.
