Ghetto house is a faster and rawer subgenre of house music that came to be recognised as a distinct style in Chicago from around 1992 onwards. It is characterised by minimalist productions based on Roland TR-808/909 drum machines, raw vocal samples and, in some cases, sexually explicit lyrics. Key figures in the genre include DJ Deeon and DJ Funk.
