Ahmed Ben Ali, the maestro of Libyan reggae, comes to Hamburg for a rare concert

04.09.2024

»Original Reggae, libyscher Stil, kein Bullshit.« Ahmed Ben Ali plays live at Hamburg‘s Knust on 4 October 2024. Ben Ali’s tracks groove to a driving offbeat and exude the feeling of Libyan lightness. Stylistically, Ahmed Ben Ali distinguishes himself from handmade reggae and Libyan folk. His sound is homemade and digital, characterised by keyboards and their presets, which are not just a means to an end – recording and mixing in one – but a stylistic feature and characteristic of his sound: reggae made in home studio. Libyan Stlye. The concert in Hamburg is not a stop on a major European tour, but a one-off event. So anyone who loves reggae or misses Libya should not miss it.

A true rarity

Ahmed, who works full-time as an engineer in Libya, has been a thoroughbred musician for as long as he can remember. The fact that he is coming to Hamburg in October is no strange coincidence, however, but is thanks to the good instincts of Jannis Stürtz and Malte Kraus. The bosses of the Berlin label Habibi Funk Records have been tracking down North African gems for almost ten years in order to reissue them and make them accessible to a new audience. This was also the case with Ahmed Ben Ali, who had previously released his music exclusively on YouTube until he was discovered by Habibi Funk. His album »Subhana« was released last year.
