Minimalism with unease
Harmonious Thelonious is the best-known project of the Düsseldorf musician Stefan Schwander. On Grumpy Pieces, which will be released on 10 April via Bureau B, he condenses key elements of his work to date: panafrican rhythms, alongside East Asian influences, form the framework against which minimalist electronics and noise elements rub.
And yet more unease seems to run through it than on earlier releases: the album title is programme. The bass foundation sounds more fractured, and a sense of uncertainty meanders through the tracks – until, after all, a subtle groove develops its pull.
