Originally from Brooklyn and currently based in Berlin, artist Chris McWayne is involved in a wide range of projects. His work includes sound design, composition, installation, sound art, acting, curating, movement art and DJing. His artistic practice explores an ever-expanding universe through performance, installation and sonic experimentation. As Brother Aten, he creates music that starts with house music but gradually moves into experimental, technoid territories.
This is also reflected in his new release, »Fragmented Dystopia«, which he recorded with lyrics by Ze R. The music here, less than ten minutes in total, reflects the cyberpunk aesthetic of the 1980s. It is reduced, emphasising machine-like qualities, minimalist, repetitive, mechanical and cold. Over these clashing, dystopian soundscapes, Ze R.’s voice floats – sometimes unemotional and monotone like an AI, sometimes punctuated by sudden, almost fragile outbursts of human emotion – adding to the atmosphere of the tracks.
