The Prodigal Son Returns. It’s been over ten years since New York producer Drew Lustman, aka FaltyDL, last released music on Planet µ. Back then, he was adding his transatlantic signature to the waning British post-dubstep hype, skillfully skimming the surface of jungle, rave, and R&B. What followed were restless years: moving from label to label, from genre to genre — without ever seeming directionless. IDM, singer-songwriter albums, ambient excursions: FaltyDL never repeated himself, but he rarely looked back either.
That he now marks this homecoming not with a lukewarm rehash of his early Planet µ output is something to be applauded. Instead, In the Wake of Wolves explores a jittery, trance-inflected strain of hyperpop — a sound that gleefully pushes techno into neon extremes without ever collapsing into mindless pounding. High-pitched vocal samples snake through glittering Y2K-era soundscapes, while rhythmic disruptions and shimmering synths create a euphoric excess — the perfect soundtrack for anyone who keeps meaning to reduce their screen time, but just can’t look away. And why go outside anyway? For these 45 minutes, the sun never stops shining.
