Jurango

An Amorphous Mass EP

Livity Sound • 2024

Tempo down. On his first fourth EP, Bristol producer Jurango brings his bass music firmly into the downtempo realm. But this isn’t your typical chill background music for pre-club vibes. The four tracks on »An Amorphous Mass« are much heavier, although by no means amorphous as the title might suggest. Jurango lays down the beat, whether as a break or a broken beat. His record also stands out because Jurango, unlike a lot of his peers, doesn’t rely on an aggressive, dominant drone bass in his approach to bass music. This style has been popular for a long time, but its often digitally distorted machismo has gotten a bit overused. Jurango needs very few ingredients at all; echo and reverb are enough for him to shape his rhythmic framework. He doesn’t overdo it either. He avoids delay-based dub techno routines, even though techno is definitely an influence on his approach. It’s all about the syncopations, the air between the beats, and what briefly flits by within it. And for want of a more apt word, that’s massive.
