What do you do when you’re an artist waiting to be picked up for a festival gig? Joy Orbison answers this question with another single aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Straightforward and brutal, it doesn’t need much of an introduction, »Flight FM« kicks off with a minimalist and steppy beat, carried by a wobbly bass foundation that turns into a rippling and crackling euphoria. Joy Orbison brings his synthesisers to life with precise sound editing, making them seem to jump out of their cases. It hisses, squeaks, purrs and rattles, the track is over as quickly as the intro, but not without having really fired up the crowd.
»Shilo’s Revenge« is similarly playful, a few delicate vocal chops slipping between the wobbly bass before a shimmering pad intervenes moodily, only to be interrupted again by the attention-seeking bass. Cheeky and unconventional sound effects, almost like samples from recorded action toys, add to the character of the single. Joy Orbison likes to show his nostalgia on the covers of his releases, often showing photographed snapshots of his family.
