Craig Tattersall is well-known. He made indie pop history as a member of Hood, helped the electronica boom at the beginning of the last decade with The Remote Viewer (together with Andrew Johnson) and has recorded 11 records as The Boats and as The Sea with Andrew Heargraves (Tape Loop Orchestra) since 2004. For their new record cellist Danny Norbury and vocalists Chris Stewart and Elaine Reynolds joined the band. For me personally Ballads Of The Research Department is my first record of The Boats. You can actually hear the influences of Hood and The Remote Viewer when elegant guitar melodies meet fine and detailed electronica. The atmosphere created by the usage of cello and piano reminds one of Dakota Suite records, the warm sound of the ballads of postrock outfit Corker/Conboy, the final piece The Ballad Of Indecision, not only because of the Japanese vocals, of Tujiko Noriko. All those are reminiscences that had their height at least ten years ago. You could accuse The Boats of ignoring the times in their way of composing, but you might as well admire the passion that preserves those sounds that can be experienced again while listening to their new record. It takes some good will but: I admire it.
