After Midnight sounds like Soul music, batucada, Latin jazz, disco-funk – and like Manila, 1980: a point of convergence where global sounds condensed. The second album by keyboardist Boy Katindig will be released on 12 June via Sama Sama Records, the new label from London DJ and curator Alice Whittington, aka Norsicaa, who helped shape Soundway Records for eight years and curated the compilation Ayo Ke Disco: Boogie, Pop & Funk From The South China Sea 1974–1988 (2024).
Groovy Manila
Katindig comes from a musical family: his father Romy helped shape the region’s Latin jazz sound. After Midnight goes beyond that musically. His cover of Isaac Hayes’s »Déjà Vu« – originally written for Dionne Warwick – becomes a Filipino instrumental, with Jun Regalado and Roger Herrera on drums and bass. »Got The Need« sounds like jazzy house before such a thing exists. »Love Till the End of Time« can be found on Paulinho da Costa’s Happy People – composed by Greg Phillinganes, who at the time was also writing for Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and The Jacksons. Manila, Rio, Los Angeles: condensed onto one record.
