Overmono, brothers Tom and Ed Russell, will release their second album Pure Devotion on 7 August via XL Recordings – named after the event series of the same name launched by the duo in 2024. Vocal support comes from John Joseph Holt, Kindora and Ruthven. The lead single, »Lockup«, appears today, contains a sample of Fast Relief’s »What A Waste« and, according to the duo, takes its cue from the raw energy of post-punk.
So detail-obsessed
Since Good Lies (2023), headline shows in front of 10,000 fans at Alexandra Palace and the closing show on Glastonbury’s West Holts Stage, Overmono have become one of the defining British acts in the dance sphere of recent years. What Pure Devotion announces is meticulous attention to detail: a 1930s station loudspeaker used as an effects unit, tape pulled across magnets, a crash cymbal – brushed with coffee grounds, crisps and vinegar – baked in an oven. A technique modelled on producer Silvia Massy, making the cymbal sound darker, warmer and less harsh. One of the tracks went through 83 versions. Machine error and re-amping: not stylistic devices, but an ethos.
Pure Devotion is available exclusively from HHV as a deluxe edition limited to 500 copies – a DJ-friendly double LP on black vinyl with alternative artwork.
