Efterklang

Piramida

4AD • 2012

Tape of the Year 2023

Efterklang are a bit like Fleet Foxes, only that they’re shaved. But that’s not really fair to the Danish musicians, because they follow a completely different approach when it comes to their songs. Still, the vocals’ harmonies can get pretty close to the ones by the favorite hermits of folk-music – and that’s not only because there could easily be a »Sedna« echoing through the woods. The melody delicately meanders its way through the electronic sound, before the whole song almost takes off. And even though everything is becoming more and more compact, it gains an airiness that repeatedly sticks out on »Piramida«. The quirky brass section on »Ghost« creates such a moment, in which all notes and ideas are running in circles and probably make some people start fantasizing something about jazz. Then again, Efterklang is really up to their ears in indie and electronic. Other influences are merely creating certain effects, like the one just mentioned. For example, the choir in »Dreams Today« never allows the song to tip over into sacral territory. Efterklang much rather use an incredibly charming piano to set the signs to the opposite and are continuously looking for great heights on their fourth album. That would be more than enough to illustrate the uniqueness the of the Danish group – but then Casper Clausen’s voice sets in, which is just as warm-hearted as his name is pornesque. Especially in the comparatively understated songs, such as »Apples«, his vocals captivate the listener. Efterklang are doing many things very right. And hopefully, they’ll go on shaving every morning – with an electric shaver, of course.
