With Weirdo, released on Gilles Peterson’s label Brownswood, British multi-instrumentalist and producer Emma-Jean Thackray has created an incredibly personal work: a somewhat strange, powerful and virtuoso mixture of grunge, pop, soul and jazz. The album was created entirely on her own – written, recorded, arranged, produced, recorded and mixed in Thackray’s flat in London.

Weirdo is a humorous examination of one’s own fears and a deep gratitude for life. It is an interplay between brooding over loss and confronting the absurdity of everyday life, which continues even in the midst of grief. With unmistakable virtuosity, Thackray shows how trivial things can take on great emotional significance – even on stage. On 18 December 2025, she will be performing live at the Privatclub in Berlin.
