James Brandon Lewis has emerged as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz. At the latest since the release of his album Jesup Wagon, the New York-born saxophonist and composer has secured a place in the front ranks – with a tone rooted as deeply in African-American musical traditions as in the freedom of avant-garde jazz.

Gospel, Blues and Ecstasy

When James Brandon Lewis takes the stage at Karlstorbahnhof Heidelberg on 24 October 2025 with his quartet, this uncompromising sound returns to southern Germany. Together with piano, bass and drums, the band unfolds an energetic blend of intensity and lyrical openness – music that oscillates between gospel, blues and improvisational ecstasy. And since jazz is at its most powerful in a live setting, this evening promises to be more than just a concert. It could well be a moment that resonates far beyond.
