İlhan Erşahin’s Istanbul Sessions are playing a concert at Hamburg’s Knust. On 21 May 2024, saxophonist İlhan Erşahin will bring his trio of instrumentalists and their fusion sound to St. Pauli. Erşahin has been running both a club and a label in New York for over 20 years with Nublu. With his »Istanbul Sessions«, the native Swede focusses on the jazz scene in the Turkish capital. Alongside Tarkan bassist Alp Ersonmez, he is accompanied by Turgut Bekoglu on drums and Izzet Kizil on percussion.
With the big names – and everyone else too
Most recently, İlhan Erşahin played at the Jazzhouse Festival in Hamburg in 2019. He has worked with Norah Jones and performed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His “Istanbul Sessions” have played at jazz festivals all over the world since their foundation in 2008. Erşahin released an album in 2022 with new klezmer trio drummer Kenny Wollesen and darkside half Dave Harrington. For “Istanbul Sessions”, he repeatedly invites European musicians such as Erik Truffaz and Nils Petter Molvær on stage.
