Want poetry over long, soft wind and synth strokes and small instruments? Look no further. Spoken word prodigy Felicia Atkinson has teamed up with Jack Rollo & Elaine Tierney, Christina Petrie AND Maxine Funke. There is a niche in which this is a veritable supergroup. Rollo and Tierney are known as Time Is Away, a DJ duo who have made a name for themselves with mixes in which all the tracks are held together by an overarching narrative, a common atmosphere, usually with a tendency towards the rural, the rugged coasts of the UK, rice paddies in … Vietnam. Christina Petrie was featured on one of these compilations. It was called “Ballads“; Petrie recorded the title track. Last up was Maxine Funke. New Zealand singer-songwriter, best known for her “Seance” album on A Colorful Storm.
Together they call themselves Annie A. Perhaps a tribute to Annie Albers, textile artist and Bauhaus scholar. The Wind That Had Not Touched Land is the rather Theodor Fontan-esque title of the album. An album that takes its time. It was produced by Felicia Atkinson, whose signature style is clearly evident. As on her solo releases, she manages to create a strange in-between world of hypnosis and menace with her sound art; you don’t know whether to cover up or defend yourself. Poems to match. In the end, you stand in your living room, armed with a soft textile, and are extremely unsure whether you want to recommend this experience to others or even repeat it yourself.
