Free Energy

Trouble In Mind • 2025

With Free Energy, Dummy provides the perfect musical backdrop for long summer nights and road trips. Just as their first album “Mandatory Enjoyment”, the new record by the four-piece band from LA was released by the Trouble in Mind label. Compared to their debut album, Free Energy seems more harmonious and flowing.

This record should be listened to from start to finish, as the order of the tracks reveals a sense of composition. The five-minute song “Dip in the Lake” opens with piano before seamlessly transitioning into “Suden Flutes”, a slower track that – as predicted in the title – features flutes.

Some songs such as “Soonish” and “Blue Dada” work as stand-alone tracks, while others seem like connecting pieces of the album. “Blue Dada” kicks off energetically, with bass and percussion, followed by soft vocals and synths. “Soonish” is quickly memorized thanks to its catchy bassline and scratchy guitar riffs. “Nullspace” begins with guitar and bubbling noises. High notes are sung. The track reminds listeners of the band The Naked and Famous.Alex Ewell, Emma Maatman, Nathan O’Dell and Joe Trainor combine numerous elements on their new record, layering tracks on top of each other. The tracks evolve. Musically, they move somewhere between indie pop and psychedelic rock.

The band Dummy is very likely to deliver a great performance at relaxed music festivals as the sun goes down. Their latest record, Free Energy, encourages listeners to stay in the flow, not let themselves be rushed and to enjoy the summer.
