The straddle-legged rock duos of yesteryear were well-known for smashing up their instruments, usually guitars, on stage after their set. Which is a bit of a waste, don’t you think? Destruction as part of the sonic concept itself is much more interesting. For his latest digital nightmare on the British label AD93, Scottish producer Callum McRae aka Lanark Artefax has chosen five tracks that boycott themselves with their metallic industrial sounds. And that’s what makes them so fascinating. McRae opens the Metallur EP with the spectacular »Surface Light«, which seems to be under such immense pressure that it could burst at any moment, leaving us to pick the shards out of our ears. An almost cheeky title by the way, because in the midst of the fascinating IDM and electro chaos of bouncing gurgles, trembling vocal shreds and whipping synths, no light survives. The title track »Metallur« and »Meszthread« follow with power, tempo and the idea of a straight beat on the dancefloor, while the ghostly ambient double pack at the end makes itself comfortable between Basinski and Actress.
