Shortly before the end of the album, the moment of revelation arrives. Madlib built the track »Answers« from his 1999 Lootpack project around the drawn-out groove in »Shady Blues«. However, the other ten instrumentals on Music by Lee Mason, originally released in 1971 on the Chappell label, also provide excellent samples and inspiration for open-minded musicians, not to mention being a treasure trove for rare groove hunters.
Originally released in the 1970s, Music by Lee Mason is one of the most sought-after LPs from the heyday of British library music. Lee Mason is the pseudonym of Londoner Pete Moore, who showcases his talent as a composer and arranger on this album. Restless strings and bright brass meet funky, jazzy grooves, while the addition of Hammond organ, harpsichord and flute provides further arrangement excellence. You can easily imagine the films and commercials that this euphoric functional music was intended to accompany.
