Canadian artist LNS and Norwegian DJ Sotofett are residents at Globus, the more musically colourful upstairs room at Tresor. Dancing there has been particularly fun since the floor’s 2022 refurbishment, which saw the installation of a crystal-clear sound system. With Globus Trax, the pair dedicate an EP to their playground, presenting their dance music aesthetic. Yet this is by no means crystal clear – it’s raw, forceful and rooted in tradition.
The opener »ClickClickClick« launches forward with its titular vocal, as a tame pad meets brittle percussion in the background before a driving bassline kicks in. It recalls the recipe of lo-fi house around 2016 but feels more creative here, looking beyond the lid of a limited toolkit and throwing in disruptive sonic splinters for good measure. »Gearbox« breathes a classic electro beat and almost overtly nods to the club’s rich Detroit heritage – the relentlessly syncopated primordial soup of electronic dance music.
Speaking of which: on their excellent cover of Blake Baxter’s »Reach Out«, LNS and DJ Sotofett pay even more direct tribute to the Tresor legacy, as the Canadian’s yearning vocals, paired with a heavy, almost hauntological Carl Craig-style funk, whisper over the nocturnal highway. Finally, »Destination 909« is a slick tool that sits somewhere between Daft Punk’s »Revolution 909« and the drum machine workouts of the Wizard.
