Mr. Fingers

Amnesia

Alleviated • 1989

Reissue of the Year 2022

Originally released in 1989, »Amnesia« is now considered an undisputed and timeless classic of deep house. Larry Heard is not for nothing cited as the artist who first instilled the deep moment in the genre that emerged from disco. The opener immediately and unmistakably demonstrates how deep house sounds and in an exemplary way. »Can You Feel It« rightly remains one of the most famous tracks in electronic; its use of the airiest hi-hats in music history still is a goosebump moment of the first order. Otherwise, apart from the extremely beautiful pads and floating chords, it is noticeable that there is not so much going on. This is another lesson that Heard taught later generations more than 30 years ago: truly good things usually come from the effective use of limited resources, not in an unlimited fleet of machines. Larry Heard is a notorious whiner who, even as Mr Fingers, stoically adds loop to loop without any disturbing sidestepping. Other engaging examples include »Washing Machine« and »Beyond The Clouds«. As part of the reissue of »Amnesia«, released on Heard’s own label Alleviated, an error has been corrected: the penultimate track »The Juice«, also a classic, especially because of its organic bassline, is now called that as well and no longer »Mystery Of Love« as on the first release. So there is no longer any reason not to buy it.
