Palmbomen II

Make A Film

World Of Paint • 2021

Music and film have always been a good combination. Film without music is possible, but sometimes something is missing, and music videos were important, at least in the past, to make the things you heard in them better known. The Dutch producer Palmbomen II is following a venerable tradition when he calls his latest album »Make a Film«, even if the record inevitably lacks pictures. You can already associate them yourself with his often miniature-like mood sketches. Despite the impressive number of 24 tracks, there is no room this time for the quirky house rumbles that could be admired on Palmbomen II in the past. Instead, there is all the more room for shades of tribalistic mystery (»Confusion Final«), digital sadness (»Sad Piece«) and metallic percussive gloom (»Slightly Dark«). He doesn’t have the complete colour palette, everything remains somewhat restrained, even where it says »majestic« or »happy«. Which contributes to the fact that the record, despite the many small different designs, fits together well on the whole. In the end, the title delivers what it seems to promise without really being able to keep it: The short sections make for some pretty great cinema.
