Roza Terenzi / Furious Frank

Split

Paper-Cuts • 2023

After the last Paper Cuts release and the mixtape »From Me, To You« by Ivy, the label now presents a split release by the two Aussies Roza Terenzi and Furious Frank. The unmistakable Rosa Terenzi takes over the A-side with her energetic sound and opens the double album with the track »Vape City«, which is characterised by electro-oriented synth break rhythms and spherical ambient melodies. Many of the sonic elements used on the opening track can also be found in the two songs by Terenzi that follow. The delicate, almost cosmic-sounding vocals are also a recurring element, giving »Kalimera« in particular its yearning and warm character. On »Total Recall« there is even a slight hippie touch with crisp drum’n’bass and quasi-trippy vocals by Noff.

On the B-side, Furious Frank continues with »Splash«, a relaxed beatdown with clear references to synth-pop à la Depeche Mode. »Moss Rock«, on the other hand, takes its cue from 90s acid trance and surprises after about one and a half minutes with a real sound storm, while »Dripp« lets the album fade out transcendently. You might expect the B-side, with Furious Frank’s nostalgic acid house melodies, to clash with the complex break rhythms of Terenzi on Side A. In fact, their individual styles merge into a soothing interplay of ambient listening session and infectious dance euphoria. Although the album can be a little kitschy at times, it also presents a well-balanced mix of mid-tempo breaks, atmospheric EDM, driving drum’n’bass and powerful techno.
