A. R. Luciani’s »Jazz in Libertà« reissued for the first time

17.06.2025

Jazz in Libertà is regarded as one of the most idiosyncratic jazz productions to come out of Italy. Originally released in 1976 on Lupus Records, the album defies conventional jazz formats with its unorthodox instrumentation and stylistic openness. Two keyboards take centre stage, accompanied by bass and drums – with guitar joining in on the title track. The nine compositions oscillate between jazz-funk directness, beat-driven grooves and psychedelic undertones.

Between funk and fever dream

Behind this unusual recording is Sicilian composer, conductor and keyboardist Antonio Ricardo Luciani (1931–2020), best known for his piece »Chanson Balladée«, the theme tune for Almanacco del Giorno, a daily broadcast on Italian state television RAI that ran for fifteen years.

On 25 July 2025, Jazz in Libertà will be officially reissued for the very first time – as part of the Edizioni Leonardi reissue series curated by Italian label BTF. As part of this year’s Summer of Jazz, the record will be available exclusively in a clear blue vinyl edition limited to 250 copies.
