Roy Ayers

Delfonic Reworked #1

BBE Music • 2025

Delfonic’s Delfonic Reworked #1 marks the launch of a new BBE Music series devoted to official Roy Ayers reworks. It all began with a spontaneous edit of »What’s the T?« by the Berlin-based DJ – a track that generated so much buzz it organically evolved into a full four-track EP.

Known for his prolific output of edits and remixes on labels like GAMM, The Outer Edge and Toy Tonics, Delfonic once again proves his instinct for rhythm and arrangement. The self-proclaimed »edit virtuoso« favours structure built for dancefloors, striking a careful balance between reverence for the original material and a sharp sense for modern club sensibilities.

The source material spans Ayers’ output from 1976 to 1981. Digging with a connoisseur’s focus, Delfonic selected four cuts for reinterpretation: »Green and Gold«, the Merry Clayton collaboration »What’s the T?«, »Sugar« featuring Carla Vaughan, and »Oh What a Lonely Feeling«, again with Clayton. For extra sonic finesse, mastering was handled by Grammy-nominated engineer Frank Merritt at The Carvery in London – known for work with Sun Ra and Bonobo, among others.

The release is a timely reminder that jazz and disco, when approached with care and craft, remain powerful unifiers on contemporary dancefloors. Delfonic’s reimagined grooves have long found their way into top spots in vinyl sales charts across the globe – and Delfonic Reworked #1 is likely to follow suit.
