After various singles, SBTRKT has finally released his debut-album. The producer from London with a soft spot for seemingly African wooden masks has already made a name for himself, despite the rather manageable number of his releases. In those, the young Englishman is moving back and forth between Dubstep, Bass-music and Garage, while still putting his focus onto the latter. Hence, both rhythm and mood of the album switch between a dreamily hypnosis, carried by heavy basses and echoing effects, and more active, fast and harmonically more positive tracks. For most of the songs, SBTRKT got himself support from various talented singers, who all have in common that the tenderness and softness of their voices blend well with the tracks. This musical interweavement works best in the hypnotic-dark songs.
Despite the rather small number of tracks, SBTRKT fulfills the goal of wanting to introduce a debut which proves the artist’s wide horizon and broad capability, while at the same time leaving quite a lasting impression.
