Record Store Day 2019 – 12 releases to look out for

05.04.2019
We’ve searched through this year’s list of releases exclusively released for Record Store Day 2019 and put together a selection of twelve records that we’ve identified as possible highlights.
Alice Clark
Alice Clark Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Wewantsounds • 1972 • from 29.99€
It is regarded as one of the best soul albums of all time. Alice Clark’s self-titled album, which was released on Mainstream Records in 1972 – and had no success at all at the time of release. Alice Clark’s voice is the perfect mixture of love, pain, longing and hope. Pieces like “Never Dit I Stop Loving You” show perhaps the best R’n’B you’ve never heard before. A forgotten jewel remastered by WeWantSounds, reissues it in the original artwork and with a 20-page booklet – and gives the almost unknown singer a long overdue story. (Christoph Benkeser)

Bob Dylan
Blood On The Tracks - Original New York Test Pressing Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Columbia • 2019 • from 24.99€
For many fans “Tangled Up In Blue” is the best song Bob Dylan has ever written. He himself described his 15th studio album in 1975 as a turning point in his own work. Recorded in different sessions in New York and Minneapolis, some test pressings came into circulation before the official release date. The alternative story to “Blood On The Track “ was born faster than Bob Dylan could roll along Highway 61. Legacy Recordings is now putting out a copy of the test press for the first time – with the missing mixes from the New York sessions that the maestro didn’t want on the official album. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony
E. 1999 Eternal Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Ruthless • 2019 • from 60.99€
Gospel and rifle shots, soul and synths, R´n´B and incredibly fast raps with a tendency to singing: With their second album “E.1999 Eternal “, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony made their debut with Ruthless Records in 1995 after backstage appearances with label boss Eazy E. He died of AIDS shortly before the release, which overshadowed the album and made it shine at the same time. Today, it is one of the classics that, in addition to the long-running themes of murder and marijuana, also sings the praises of the punctual arrival of social welfare. Curious: The LP just established the witch’s board as a gang-insignia. Controversy: The birth of the BTnH style in the spirit of the Freestyle Fellowship. First reissue ever. (Christian Neubert)

Chicha Libre
Sonido Amazonico With Etched D Side Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Barbes • 2019 • from 32.99€
For the first time ever on vinyl is Chicha Libre’s debut »Sonido Amazonico«, released in 2008. The Peruvians follow a crude mixture of cumbia, surf guitars, Farfisa organs and the folkloristic melodies of the Andean. It’s a Vinyl 2LP, with no music on the D-side, but a nice laser etching. (Sebastian Hinz)

Emerson
If You Need Me, Call Me Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Kalita • 2019 • from 25.99€
Why the album “If You need Me, Call Me “ by Emerson was never released will probably remain a secret forever. After all, in 1988 only the single “Sending All My Love Out” was released, a late disco anthem carried by harmoniously overturned synthesizer flags. With its experimental sampling it didn’t quite fit into the era of polished productions. If you want to buy one of these long out-of-print singles today, you have to dig deep into your pocket – or take the unique chance: After the master tapes of the album have been released, the London label Kalita still gives the record by Emerson the light of day. (Christoph Benkeser)

Fela Kuti & Roy Ayers
Music Of Many Colours Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Knitting Factory • 2019 • from 27.99€
A peculiar combination on the surface: Fela Kuti[:http://www.hhv-mag.com/de/glossareintrag/457/fela-kuti had created an explosive connection between pop and politics with Afrobeat, Roy Ayers](http://www.hhv-mag.com/de/glossareintrag/249/roy-ayers) had discovered Disco when the two went on tour together with their bands in Nigeria in 1979. As a crowning finale, the two of them actually recorded songs together that were first released on »Music Of Many Colours« in 1980. On RSD2019 this record will be reissued for the first time since the late 1980s (in a limited edition). Apparently on rainbow starburst vinyl. We visualize this multicolored. (Andreas Schnell)

Juice People Unlimited
OST Disco Godfather Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Strange Disc • 1979 • from 30.99€
The revenge drama [Disco Godfather “ (published in Germany as “Helden der Nacht” in 1987 on VHS), which was set in the disco milieu, came to American cinema in 1979 and very quickly disappeared again. While the film might be rediscoverable (“after all 83% at Rotten Tomatoes](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/disco_godfather,) while this characters are hacked into the keyboard), the soundtrack recorded by Juice People Unlimited has long been a sought-after collector’s item. No wonder, because there hasn’t been a reissue since 1979. Now – this makes it a highlight of this year’s RSD – the record will be reissued in Europe limited to 1,000 copies. With liner notes, unreleased photos, Obi Strip.

Mabumi Yamaguchi
Mabumi Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Trio • 1981 • from 39.99€
Saxophonist *Mabumi Yamaguchi helped shape the Japanese jazz scene in the 1970s. In 1981 he met drummer Tony Williams, pianist Kenny Kirkland and Miroslav Vitouš in New York, who had previously made a name for himself for his rhythmic bass playing on Weather Report. The quartet recorded “Mabumi “ in two days. Extensive jazz solos dazzle in fender sequences that let you pack your suitcases in their washed-out aesthetics to jet to the Balearic Islands and taste exquisite wines in the setting sun. Jazz fusion to melt away. Oh, the facts: remastered from the original tapes, 180g vinyl, original artwork with Obi Strip. (Christoph Benkeser)

Rhythm Makers
Soul On Your Side Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Vigor / Delite • 1976 • from 39.99€
The pure funk madness can be experienced on the first and only album of the legendary New York group Rhythm Makers, which is now re-released with a weight of 180g, remastered from the original tapes, in the original artwork as well. The bass is digging deep trenches, in which the guitars’ Wah Wah is soaking, before the Moog synthesizer is rolling over as a grooving bulldozer and making Tabula Rasa. Consequently, no vocals are used, but the whole thing still brings the hips faster into unshapely circular movements than anything that the incomparably more successful Kool & The Gang ever sent into the ether. (Christoph Benkeser)

The Grodeck Whipperjenny
The Grodeck Whipperjenny Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Now-Again • 1970 • from 29.99€
The only album by The Grodeck Whipperjenny can be heard under the sign of Woodstock. David Matthews, who already worked as an arranger for James Brown’s soul in the late 1960s, drummed up a group of jazz musicians in 1970 – and recorded an album that intoxicates itself in the psychedelic soul of Funkadelic, flirts with the sound of the early Jefferson Airplane and rubs off driving bass sounds from Motown productions. A classic sister album to James Brown’s “Sho Is Funky Down Here”. First re-released, with extensive liner notes and never before published photos. (Christoph Benkeser)

Ziad Rahbani
Abu Ali Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Wewantsounds • 1978 • from 21.99€
The 12" “Abu Ali “ (1978) by Ziad Rahbani gets a reissue after more than 40 years. Both of its sides are each equipped with a 13-minute monument to the elegance of Arab jazz funk in the late 1970s. The title track begins with funk slaps and trumpets before the flute and melodic string arpeggios develop a certain soundtrack quality. Intermezzi of saxophone, electric guitar and piano loosen up both pieces, which are never swallowed by the instrumental variety – Beirut and New York on musical eye level. (Nils Schlechtriemen)

V.A.
OST Lost In Translation Record Store Day 2019 Edition
Emperor Norton • 2003 • from 25.99€
The atmospherically compiled soundtrack to Sofia Copolla’s second feature film “Lost In Translation “ has it all. He sets the emotional states of his two protagonists to music with touching melancholy and transports the mood thrown back on itself through the introduction of a Shoegaze revival, for which My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields, who contributes four tracks, and songs by Air, Squarepusher and The Jesus and Mary Chain, for example, are also used. What else is there? On the cover then as now the butt of Scarlett Johansson. Considering the artwork (or rather the artist’s background), it’s almost astonishing that the RSD edition doesn’t appear as a picture disc… (Christian Neubert)
