For many fans “Tangled Up In Blue” is the best song Bob Dylan has ever written. He himself described his 15th studio album in 1975 as a turning point in his own work. Recorded in different sessions in New York and Minneapolis, some test pressings came into circulation before the official release date. The alternative story to “Blood On The Track “ was born faster than Bob Dylan could roll along Highway 61. Legacy Recordings is now putting out a copy of the test press for the first time – with the missing mixes from the New York sessions that the maestro didn’t want on the official album. Gospel and rifle shots, soul and synths, R´n´B and incredibly fast raps with a tendency to singing: With their second album “E.1999 Eternal “, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony made their debut with Ruthless Records in 1995 after backstage appearances with label boss Eazy E. He died of AIDS shortly before the release, which overshadowed the album and made it shine at the same time. Today, it is one of the classics that, in addition to the long-running themes of murder and marijuana, also sings the praises of the punctual arrival of social welfare. If you want to buy one of these long out-of-print singles today, you have to dig deep into your pocket – or take the unique chance: After the master tapes of the album have been released, the London label Kalita still gives the record by Emerson the light of day. A peculiar combination on the surface: Fela Kuti[:http://www.hhv-mag.com/de/glossareintrag/457/fela-kuti had created an explosive connection between pop and politics with Afrobeat, Roy Ayers](http://www.hhv-mag.com/de/glossareintrag/249/roy-ayers) had discovered Disco when the two went on tour together with their bands in Nigeria in 1979. As a crowning finale, the two of them actually recorded songs together that were first released on »Music Of Many Colours« in 1980. The revenge drama [Disco Godfather “ (published in Germany as “Helden der Nacht” in 1987 on VHS), which was set in the disco milieu, came to American cinema in 1979 and very quickly disappeared again. While the film might be rediscoverable (“after all 83% at Rotten Tomatoes](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/disco_godfather,) while this characters are hacked into the keyboard), the soundtrack recorded by Juice People Unlimited has long been a sought-after collector’s item. No wonder, because there hasn’t been a reissue since 1979. Now – this makes it a highlight of this year’s RSD – the record will be reissued in Europe limited to 1,000 copies. Saxophonist *Mabumi Yamaguchi helped shape the Japanese jazz scene in the 1970s. In 1981 he met drummer Tony Williams, pianist Kenny Kirkland and Miroslav Vitouš in New York, who had previously made a name for himself for his rhythmic bass playing on Weather Report. The quartet recorded “Mabumi “ in two days. Extensive jazz solos dazzle in fender sequences that let you pack your suitcases in their washed-out aesthetics to jet to the Balearic Islands and taste exquisite wines in the setting sun. The pure funk madness can be experienced on the first and only album of the legendary New York group Rhythm Makers, which is now re-released with a weight of 180g, remastered from the original tapes, in the original artwork as well. The bass is digging deep trenches, in which the guitars’ Wah Wah is soaking, before the Moog synthesizer is rolling over as a grooving bulldozer and making Tabula Rasa. Consequently, no vocals are used, but the whole thing still brings the hips faster into unshapely circular movements than anything that the incomparably more successful Kool & The Gang ever sent into the ether. The only album by The Grodeck Whipperjenny can be heard under the sign of Woodstock. David Matthews, who already worked as an arranger for James Brown’s soul in the late 1960s, drummed up a group of jazz musicians in 1970 – and recorded an album that intoxicates itself in the psychedelic soul of Funkadelic, flirts with the sound of the early Jefferson Airplane and rubs off driving bass sounds from Motown productions. The 12" “Abu Ali “ (1978) by Ziad Rahbani gets a reissue after more than 40 years. Both of its sides are each equipped with a 13-minute monument to the elegance of Arab jazz funk in the late 1970s. The title track begins with funk slaps and trumpets before the flute and melodic string arpeggios develop a certain soundtrack quality. Intermezzi of saxophone, electric guitar and piano loosen up both pieces, which are never swallowed by the instrumental variety – Beirut and New York on musical eye level. (Nils Schlechtriemen)

The atmospherically compiled soundtrack to Sofia Copolla’s second feature film “Lost In Translation “ has it all. He sets the emotional states of his two protagonists to music with touching melancholy and transports the mood thrown back on itself through the introduction of a Shoegaze revival, for which My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields, who contributes four tracks, and songs by Air, Squarepusher and The Jesus and Mary Chain, for example, are also used. What else is there? On the cover then as now the butt of Scarlett Johansson. Considering the artwork (or rather the artist’s background), it’s almost astonishing that the RSD edition doesn’t appear as a picture disc… (Christian Neubert)
