David Vunk understands electronic dance music as a physical experience – schooled in the raw, excessive club culture of his native Netherlands. His tracks grind, growl and rumble. The machines he uses do not speak softly, but directly – similar to his legendary compatriot I-F or, more recently, the Russian analog master Gesloten Cirkel. On his label Moustache Records, the Rotterdam native regularly releases music that resembles his appearance: muscular, dazzling, eccentric. Always with the promise of more to come – more bass, more acid, more excess.
Scheurneus EP is a prime example. »You Sexy Bassline« introduces a scratchy, analog bubbling groove. Also: moans from the cruising toilet and a synth run that ebbs and flows like an uncontrollable level. »Sorry Ain’t Enough« quotes electro without bending to its mold – angularly produced, with a love of machine sound and enough air to breathe between the elements. Every track on this EP works on the floor, but carries more than mere functionality: an almost romantic devotion to acid, to old hardware, to parties that must never end. Scheurneus EP brings it all into shape – loud, direct, dirty and full of character.
