Tape of the Year 2023

Josh Furey is a beat-smith from Calgary, Canada. His debut, released in 2008, bore the symptomatic title »Archaeology«,already suggesting that he’s one of those producers who dig deeply for the samples they base their tracks on. Enriched by more self-recorded sounds and various field-recordings, his sound stands in a certain tradition, in which his fellow countryman Factor keeps creating one bomb after another. Still, Josh Furey’s line is a straighter one, all in all approaching things in a less playful manner: His instrumentals follow the repititive sound-concept of classical HipHop-tracks, enabling him to come up with downbeat-tracks getting along just splendidly with productions by Joe Beats, Blockhead Maker or 2econd Class Citizen Beats around the 90bpm-marker will make your head nod, while carefully excavated percussion-sounds add the tickering-tackering funk to the 4/4 time. What gives the record its distinctive shape besides the guitar is a Koto, a Japanese string-instrument that once bestowed a major hit upon the East Flatbush Project. The Koto carries the track »Isles« over to the Japanes Islands and also adds some Japanase flavor to the track »Katana«. It’s obvious that RZA served as a model for the track, while »93« reminds us of the groundbraking record that RZA released in the same year: Of course, we’re talking about »Enter The 36 Chamber« by the Wu Tang Clan. »Petals« might not play in the same league as the Clan did in its early days, but it’s still a record that makes you want to stay close to the repeat-button.
