Nobody had a collaboration between deep reggaetón starlet Brian Piñeyro (a.k.a DJ Python a.k.a. DJ Wey a.k.a. etc., etc.) and eso-emo ambient suprema Ana Roxanne on their bingo card, so it’s all the nicer that Natural Wonder Beauty Concept do together what no one would have dared to imagine, namely doing everything different from their respective solo projects. Pop was always somehow implicit in the work of both of them, but on these ten pieces they finally embrace it with vigour. Of course, this happens in very own and sometimes peculiar ways, even when it calls up a lot of familiar things. »Sword« and »World Freehand Circle Drawing« are nods to Björk in her IDM pop phase, with »III« Piñeyro makes his debut as a cloud rap crooner over Autechre-like clatter, and in the title track Roxanne smoothly mimes PinkPantheress to errant jungle breaks. Other tracks are reminiscent of the wilder moments of The Knife or Fever Ray and Boards Of Canada, and in between all that, things get even weirder. However, as obvious as the references to this or that favourite musician may seem at times, »Natural Wonder Beauty Concept« never sounds like a mere quote of other people’s ideas. And instead like the unlikely meeting of two fundamentally different artists who make the creative differences between their respective fields of activity sound extremely productive. A bit innovative, if you will.
