To mark the 30th anniversary of his album Whiskey, Jay-Jay Johanson is bringing this remarkable debut back to the stage on 9 October 2026 – in the intimate setting of Kantine am Berghain in Berlin. At the time, the pioneer of electronic songwriting transferred classic chanson material into trip-hop shaped by the Bristol sound, enriching the mix with elements of nu jazz and drum’n’bass. The idiosyncratic, slightly skewed arrangements, meeting melancholic vocals, create an almost film-noir aesthetic.

Indulging in trip-hop melancholy
The cinematic early work by the Swedish musician also produced further trip-hop classics with »Tattoo« and »Poison«. Since the 2000s, Johanson has experimented with various electronic styles, from electroclash and indietronica to the almost ambient-like atmosphere of his current album Backstage (2025). Thanks to this restaging, one can now once again indulge in warm trip-hop melancholy.
