Guest Mix: FloFilz

11.07.2024
The lo-fi instrumentalist and leading exporter of German beats to the playlists of the international beat scene has just released his new album »handful«. For us, he expands the sound cosmos with an exclusive guest mix.

FloFilz’s work has always followed longings rather than the latest trends. Paris, Lisbon, Japan—since his Soundcloud debut with the surprise hit »Gitdown« in 2014, the beatmaker with biographical connections to Belgium and Germany has been stretching his ears out into the world, and the world into his music. Whether with »Metronom«, »Cenário« or most recently »Yurika« (with the hip-hop quartet Bokoya), Florian Maier (his real name) celebrates an unruffled timelessness on his releases that has tastemakers from NTS to BBC to Boiler Room in international agreement and bliss.

An unflappable timelessness

On his latest album, »handful«, the adopted Berliner proves once again that classic hip-hop construction with samples from cool jazz or bebop, drum kits in the 1980s BPM range and the spirit of Pete Rock or Q-Tip doesn’t have to sacrifice musicality and versatility in 2024. The trained violinist leads us tastefully and unobtrusively through ten instrumental lo-fi tunes (the only vocal feature is on »Magic« with Canadian singer Kallitechnis) that recline even more than Ice Cube sitting in an Eames chair.

When the jazz lover, former orchestra musician and son of two professional musicians isn’t sharing streaming minutes with the likes of MF Doom, Alfa Mist, Juju Rogers, Wun Two or his friend and mentor Hubert Daviz, he can be found behind the DJ controls on various continents. Check him out in today’s Guest Mix.
