BBE Records (Record label)
BBE Records is a Berlin-based record label, founded by Peter Adarkwah and Ben Jolly in London, UK, in 1995. The name of the label is taken from the Song Barely Breaking Even by The Universal Robot Band from 1982. While it started as a label for compilations only, BBE Records, especially through their series »Beat Generation«, managed to become a genuine record label over the years. »Beat Generation« gave hip hop producers the opportunity to show their skills and can be seen as a predecessor of the beat producer movement. It featured artists including J Dilla, Pete Rock, Marley Marl, DJ Spinna, Jazzy Jeff, King Britt and Madlib on nine records so far. In the last years BBE Records released albums as well (such as those of J-Live, TY, DJ Vadim, Pete Rock and Phantogram) without giving up their focus on compilations.

The influencer's influencer
Peter Adarkwah is the reason why some lives have been changed by J Dilla, why Roy Ayers experienced a second spring and why Japanese jazz albums are reviewed by Pitchfork. In other words: BBE Music turns 25 years this year.

Warm vibrations with universal attraction
The American vibraphonist, singer, songwriter and arranger Roy Ayers is one of the most sampled contemporary musicians. With songs like »Everybody Loves The Sunshine«, the soul jazz legend, which celebrates it’s 80th birthday in September, became the main inspiration for Acid Jazz in the late 90s. His new album “Roy Ayers JID 002” on Jazz Is Dead with Adrian Younge and ex-ATCQ producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad continues his golden period of the Polydor years in the 70s seamlessly.

J Dilla – The Shining (2006)
»The Shining« was J Dilla’s first posthumous album. It was released on August 22, 2006 on BBE Records. J Dilla thought it was 75% finished. Others say that only the mastering was missing. Karriem Riggins finally finished it. You get soul, you get funk, you get the tricky stuff, and you can also get this raw rap shit. You get the infinite forms of expression that J Dilla mastered. It’s a true classic.

Electric Wire Hustle
That certain Vibe
Electric Wire Hustle is the latest export product from Wellington, New Zealand. The band found each other through their mutual love for Soul, Hip Hop and the Dilla beat production. Their song Perception traveled around the world and got radio peers by the likes of Gilles Peterson and Benji B. listening. Collaborations with Georgia Ann Muldrow and Steve Spacek added up to their music. HHV.de-Mag-author Valentin Menedetter met them.
